Jamaica

Spencer and May Boardman led a short-term mission trip to do construction work on a school for deaf children in Jamaica November 14-21, 2009. The Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf (CCCD) sponsors the school. A group from Cedar Springs has been sent to continue construction work on the Montego Bay campus since 1992. The ministry of CCCD is to reach the deaf of Jamaica with the gospel of Christ, to provide schools where the deaf may acquire a quality education in order to receive the gospel and share it with others, and to assist and empower the deaf to become Christ-centered, independent, self-supporting citizens. There were a total of 10 people who went on this trip. The work this time involved painting security bars on the principal's house; making, painting and installing cabinets in the clinic; installing and painting a new door on the principal's house; painting the entrance security gate; making frames for whiteboards and installing them in class rooms; and installing a ceiling in a classroom. We had a wonderfully spiritual church service with our Jamaica "family" on Sunday. This time the pastor spoke on how young people are pulled from their spiritual walk to the secular walk through music. In the US we are able to enjoy all kinds of music and not be judged by it. In Jamaica, the young people have to pick from two music rivals. Their identity is based on which music they choose. The pastor referred to music as being their "idol" and they worshiped it instead of God. We once again could identify with our brothers and sisters in Christ with their concern for the spiritual upbringing of their children. Our goal for these short-term mission trips is to introduce people to mission work in general. Once they experience a trip like this, they almost always return with a heart for mission work. Each time we go, God shows us why each person was hand chosen by Him to be there. Again this time, several children who needed school funding were sponsored by team members. We had a devotional each night after work using Kay Author's 40-minute Bible Study called "Living Victoriously in Difficult Times." We had a wonderful R & R day relaxing together and site-seeing in Ocho Rios, which is about two and a half hours away from Montego Bay. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to CSPC for allowing us to serve God in this capacity through funding and prayer support, and to the Training and Trips Team for their guidance and monetary support. God truly blessed us!!!
